2017 is shaping up to be a big year for strategic land use planning in the City of Glen Eira.

In 2016, Glen Eira City Council undertook extensive consultation with the community to review its Planning Scheme. The Planning Scheme was adopted in August and sets a strategic vision for the municipality.

Glen Eira City Council Mayor Cr Mary Delahunty said this year, we want to work closely with the community to guide and shape the development of the priorities identified, including guiding building development; addressing car parking needs; providing more inviting places for people; and planning for our future transport requirements.

"We have already launched a Tell us what you love about your shopping strip campaign, which has been generating dynamic conversation. This feedback will be used to develop a community-owned vision for each of the shopping centres and shopping strips across Glen Eira," Cr Delahunty said.

In March we will be seeking input on our early ideas to address future needs in our centres that are experiencing significant change, including Bentleigh, Elsternwick, Carnegie, Murrumbeena and Hughesdale. We encourage you to attend one of our drop-in sessions and provide us with feedback on key centre shaping project ideas, including:

• constructing new multi-level carparks in Carnegie, Bentleigh and Elsternwick;
• exploring a new community hub/library in Elsternwick;
• revamping the plaza in Bentleigh;
• more green space in Carnegie;
• strengthening the village feel in Murrumbeena; and
• better connecting Hughesdale to Boyd Park.

Council is also developing building and development guidelines for the commercial areas within Glen Eira, with a detailed focus on Bentleigh, Carnegie and Elsternwick. We will be looking for community views on these new proposed guidelines in the middle of the year.

"Your feedback throughout each of the above stages is invaluable and will help form our plans for the future of Bentleigh, Carnegie and Elsternwick," Cr Delahunty said. "The draft plans will be presented for your final thoughts in October.

"There will be plenty of chances to get involved throughout the year, and we encourage the whole Glen Eira community to take advantage of the opportunity to have a say."
